To the Locals here at the SA Sand Dunes, the Middle Bowl is almost as iconic as ChokeCherry or Crapo's Hill. Like the two afforementioned sites, growing up around here it was always considered one of those "milestones reached" when you had enough machine under your butt and enough sand in your butt to make a successful climb to the top or a run around the rim. Also, to the Locals, its actually always been called "Big Bowl". If you have noticed I always use the names I grew up using but in this case I didn't. Go figure.
Anyway, the Middle Bowl is usually by-passed on the way to and from Choke. I think its because its kinda isolated by a sand ridge on its north side that hides it from duners traveling on the Middle Trail and those traveling the Low Trail are usually cruising through at high speeds on their way to and from. It is a fun place to stop off, though, and I highly recommend it as a "stop and take a run at it" spot.
